Filters and Air Cleaners

-You can either buy a filter, or you can be the filter

We recommend that our customers go with at least a washable type filter. The fiberglass throw-away filters (called "cheapies") only stop about 9% of the particles in the air. This is almost as bad as using no filter at all. Following are some better options that are very reasonably priced if you take into account the fact that they are doing a much better job of filtration and that they last much longer, in some cases forever!

Duralast Filter - This 25% efficient, impingement-style filter (loads particles inside the filter instead of on the surface of it) is washable and usually lasts for up to five (5) years. We recommend that you buy a bottle of spraykote with it. The spraykote is a water-soluable "sticky stuff" that you spray on the filter after you clean it. Then when the air passes through the filter, the dirt, debris etc. sticks to the spraykote, which increases the efficiency of the filter to about 35%. When the time comes to clean the filter, all you have to do is rinse it with warm water. The filterkote disolves, and all the debris rinses down the drain.

Electrostatic filter - This filter is about 85-90% efficient. It is also an impingement-style filter. Air passing through the nylon mesch fibers creates a positively charged field which actually draws the negatively charged particles, such as dust/pollen/animal dander/etc. to the filter, where they are trapped till they're purposely washed away later. It comes with a lifetime guarantee and is the best filter you can buy without changing your ductwork. ***NOTE*** Do not confuse these professional quality electrostatic filters with the ones you might see elsewhere for less money. You would usually be better off using a Duralast filter than any of the inferior quality electrostatics.

Air Bear Cartridge-Style Air Cleaner - This air cleaner reaches 99% efficiency on all particles five microns (.0005 of an meter!) or larger (a pencil point is about 200 microns in diameter). It accomplishes this by utilizing highly efficient material, or media, capable of catching particles as small as 1/10 of a micron! By compacting many square feet of this material into a cartridge, it can clean the air for a full year without replacement. In heating only applications, you can usually get two years of use without changing the media.
